This has been a wonderful last week of school for our classroom community. The children have enjoyed their time together cooperatively playing in the classroom and on the playground, cleaning out the room, performing their musical, and working as a team during Field Day.
While Math groups ended last week, both classes enjoyed a math game day on Monday and learned some mathematical strategies for estimating amounts. The children then applied these strategies to estimating how many pieces of candy filled a jar in Mrs. Carpenter's room. After some fun math games, including Clumsy Thief and Tensies, we counted the actual amount by grouping the candy into tens. The Class Auction was another exciting math activity as children used pretend auction dollars to purchase items from the room such as left over scrapbox materials, chalk, crayons, and more. With each child receiving the same amount of money, they needed to keep track of how much they had spent before bidding on a new item.
Wrapping up a great school year together, children signed their names on frames featuring a class photo and recounted some of their favorite memories from this school year. Some of the highlights are below:
"My favorite memory was when we made our memoirs. I liked making the drawings and I liked reading mine to the kindergarten class."
"Flea Market Math was my favorite math activity. We brought a dollar and a bag. I bought a fidget cube for five cents. It was fun!"
"I like doing the marble run during free choice and playing with Legos."
"I liked fingerprinting because now I know what fingerprint I have. We traced our hand, we pressed very hard with a pencil on paper, we put our fingers in the part that the pencil touched, we put tape on our fingers, and put tape with our fingerprints on the drawing of our hands."
"I liked doing the fingerprinting because because it was fun and I didn't know you could print fingerprints like that. I taught my dad how to do it."
"I liked the auction when I used my fake auction money to buy stuff from the classroom. I bought a box with crystal, wood, dry leaves, fossils, and the magnifying glass inside."
"My favorite thing to study was writing memoirs and small moments. I felt like going back to the time of those memories felt really good to write about."
"I liked it when we went to Frog and Toad at the Wild Swan Theater. It was really funny."
"It felt good painting with other people near me when we were doing our heart maps."
"I liked when we all went out and played chicken tag on the playground."
"I liked doing research and studying about new animals during free choice. I like drawing. I liked going on the trips."
"I liked making my building for the city. I used cardboard and I used the a flat base because I thought that would be good for my zoo entrance. I really liked making the designs for the building, it was exciting to me because I like making stuff."
"My favorite project was making the city. I like crafts and I really like building with cardboard. The most exciting part was painting and trying to decide on shapes and sketching and deciding what I was going to do when I was making a design. I like to build with cardboard and paper towel rolls at home too. "
... and many more.
What a pleasure it was to watch these children think back on all that they have experienced and learned this year. It certainly has been a wonderful year filled with many exciting memories that we have made together. I hope that your summer break is filled with fun, joy, and many happy memories too!
